essay
An important component in Emil Nolde's artistic oeuvre are the watercolors with flowers, which convey a lot of what he wanted in their suggestive color effect. Beyond all the beauty of form, it is above all the color in these watercolors that determines the tenor of the work. The often described technique of wet-on-wet painting allows the colors to convey a sensual allure that can hardly be found in any other painterly work. The suggestion of color dominates the composition, which is limited to a few, dense and close-up flowers. This creates a vividness of the visual that characterizes this entire series of works.
