essay
Emil Nolde often made his strongest statement in the small-format watercolors. The sea is the preferred theme for Nolde as a landscape inspiration, although for him it is not the water, but the sky that is the event. The horizon and the sea merge in a single glowing carpet of color, which determines the expression of the composition, accentuated by the small dark blue steamer. Here, too, Nolde remains true to his once-found composition scheme, which is entirely determined by the expressiveness of the colors. Being lost in the elements is one of the artist's great pictorial themes, who, living by the North Sea, gains a new, completely unknown side with his sensual splendor of colors. Nolde's technique of wet-on-wet painting also benefits this small composition, which is unparalleled in the freshness of its colors. [SM]
