Emil Nolde transforms a rather unusual subject into an almost dramatic scene in his own way. The panther striding out of the dark has all the secrets that characterize this big cat. Nolde decides on an unusual composition in which only two thirds of the stretched body of the creeping animal can be seen. Stepping out of the darkness, which Nolde reproduces here in a shaded blue, is the mysterious narrative element of this work, which in its pictorial expression is similar to the flower and landscape watercolors, which evoke the same fairytale-like, dramatic mood with their dark, glowing colors. In the winter of 1923/24 Emil Nolde made a series of watercolors based on studies in the Berlin zoo. But the watercolor goes far beyond the study,
