essay
It takes great empathy and the special inner relationship that Emil Nolde has with the landscape of his homeland East Friesland in order to see in it the source of a rich artistic creation. From this barren landscape of the north, which is exposed to constantly changing lighting, Nolde wins those atmospheric works that make up a large part of his entire artistic work. The high sky over a plain, in which every elevation becomes an event, in its cloud-rich variety is the core motif of almost all of these works. The drama of the sky determines the drama of the entire picture message. It is by her that Nolde's high level of artistic empathy can be measured, which he shows towards his home landscape.
