PROVENANCE: Galerie Thomas, Munich.
Private collection Germany.

Emil Nolde's watercolor technique, in which the colors are painted into the moistened paper, is demonstrated here as an example. Without any preliminary drawing in pencil or chalk, the artist works directly with the watercolor brush. The strong stalks of the iris with their foliage form the basic structure behind which the blaze of color of the flowers can unfold. The result is a balanced composition, captivating in its clear colors. The brilliance of the colors, their pure, unadulterated glow, were Nolde's top priority. Because of these watercolors with their technical perfection alone, he occupies a special position within German painting of the first half of the twentieth century. Nolde has opened a new dimension to the display of flowers, away from the preppy and detailed presentation to the core of the statement. The overall effect of the flower was the intended goal, which he modulated in many variations, but always realized with the same mastery of color statement. [KD]
