essay
The mountain landscapes, which are less common in comparison, are an attractive counterpart to the barren, wide landscapes of his homeland, East Frisia. Again and again Nolde travels to the Swiss mountains in search of health reinforcement. The mountain watercolors are usually created outside directly in front of the motif. They tell of the imposing backdrops that Nolde captures on paper in the usual indulgent manner. Here, too, he finds the wide skies and dramatic play of colors that inspire his watercolors. Nolde has been working with his "wet-on-wet" technique on Japanese paper since 1910, the execution of which he has brought to a mastery which will ultimately become his trademark. A thin film of water on which the watercolor paint is placed creates those blue streaks, which so poetically reproduce the surface of the crystal clear mountain lake. The color clouds of the setting sun are reflected in the peacefully lying water surface. The imposing sky remains the main protagonist of this composition, an uplifting moment captured in a sea of colors. [SM]
